London Marathon

Watford Mencap would like to thank Dion Sherrard and Paul Johnson for running this year's London Marathon in aid of us. Although money is still coming in, it's likely that they raised £1000 which is great! Dion's fundraising was matched by the company he works for - Vocalink. Paul, who ran in memory of his daughter Sarah, would like to thank the employees of Skanska (where his wife Marion works) for their sponsorship.

Would you like to run the London Marathon for Watford Mencap?

Here's how!....

You should enter the public ballot for the 2009 Marathon. This opens on 13th April 2008 and can all be done online. Thousands of people apply each year for a place so it’s by no means a guaranteed way of entering. It is however the easiest way (and the only way of guaranteeing that you raise money for the charity you want).

Log onto: www.london-marathon.co.uk

You will find out between August and October whether or not you've been successful. If you have been successful, you can start training and raising money for Watford Mencap straight away! There is no minimum sponsorship to raise and there is a low registration fee.

If you’re not successful it is advised to apply for what’s called a charity ‘Golden Bond’ place. National Mencap has some of these spaces. There would be a £100 registration fee and the minimum sponsorship to raise is £1600 for National Mencap. As we would want the money to come to Watford Mencap an agreement would be worked out with them (e.g. they’d keep a %, Watford Mencap would take the rest, or something similar). Obviously their Golden Bond places are also in high demand so they couldn’t simply give them away.

We would definitely encourage you to enter the public ballot and keep your fingers crossed!
