Learning and Leisure Gardening Project

We have a gardening plot at Barton Way allotments in Croxley. It is on the main bus route and very accessible.

Karen Reilly, a Watford Mencap member of staff, co-ordinates this project and we have a small core group of people with learning disabilities who are learning practical horticulture. We provide people with technical skills such as learning about sowing, planting and harvesting.

Indoor activities have included making herb baskets, Christmas crafts, planting up troughs for spring, making bird feeders and crop labels.

This venture has also provided and will continue to develop opportunities for our clients to visit and take part in allotment open day, Croxley revels, horticulture show. This has opened up avenues for our clients to volunteer with partner organisations.

As well as running practical sessions in horticulture, we aim to form a social enterprise by selling hand - made crafts and offering gardening services.

This project will provide education with health benefits, social interaction and a qualification to develop the people we support.
